The origin of the wedding ring is carved from ancient Roman tradition, where husbands gave their wives a metal ring, which was attached to a small key.
This symbolised ownership.
The ring was worn on the fourth finger of their left hand because it was believed that the vein of love "Vena Amoris" ran directly to one's heart.
Prior to metal rings however, ancient Egyptians made use of hemp and reeds to make a wedding band. They believed it aligned with a couple's vow to be together for eternity.
The material was not durable though, soon they started fashioning rings out of bones, leather and ivory.
Much later, the use of more expensive metal like gold started to trend.
