History Of Wigs
The origin of wigs can be traced to the Egyptians who shaved their hair because of the hot dessert sun. They however found bald hair ugly and used wigs to cover it. In ancient Rome and Greece, hair was considered sacred but wigd were used to cover baldness. Around the 15th century in the western world, wigs were used to cover baldness and sores mostly caused by syphillis. Men and women wore wigs. Wigs were made from materials like silver, yak, wool and human hair. The kind of wig worn is an indication of the class the person belonged to.
When Christianity became legal in 313AD, the church ruled that wearing a wig was worse than adultery and later ordered that married women should cover their hair but wigs remained popular.
In 1715, riots broke out in Caen, France, when people started using flour to powder their wigs. This caused a shortage of bread.
In 1915, hairstylist Carita started to make wig for Givenchy's fashion show
