HISTORY OF THE SHOPPING CART

www.origininbits.blogspot.com
Sylvan Goldman, owner of the Humpty Dumpty supermarket in Oklahoma acknowledged that for customers to make more purchase in a single trip, they would need an easier way of carrying goods around the supermarket, hence ensuring more profit for him.
He came up with the idea of the shopping cart. He placed a basket on a folding chair and wheels on its legs. Later  with the help of Fred Young, an employee who was also a mechanic, they came up with a metal frame with two wire baskets in the the late 1930s.
The patent for the invention was awarded on April 9  1940. Many people did not like the idea. They claimed it looked like a baby carriage. Goldman hired models to push his invention  around his supermarket to show the effectiveness, this improved acceptance and people started to use it.
